Investigation of Shelby County Jail inmate’s death continues

UPDATE @ 9:40 p.m. (Feb. 16): Shelby County sheriff's detectives are interviewing county jail inmates as part of their investigation into the death of inmate Jacob Martin Lewis.  

The sheriff tells News Center 7’s Steve Baker he suspects a possible heroin overdose, but his investigators are awaiting the results of a toxicology report before releasing any more information.

FIRST REPORT (Feb. 15)

An inmate at the Shelby County Jail died this morning in his cell and the circumstances were not immediately released.

Jacob Martin Lewis, 28, of Sidney, was pronounced dead after he was found not breathing about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lewis had been booked into the jail Jan. 30 on one count of trafficking in a counterfeit controlled substance, according to the sheriff’s office.

The investigation into his death is ongoing and no other details were released.
