Deputies said they responded around 1 p.m. Tuesday to the German Zion Cemetery on Eisley Road on a report of a person threatening suicide while sitting in a vehicle parked at the cemetery.
Gillispie shot himself while deputies and detectives spoke with him on the scene, according to the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office.
The Lima Police Department asked for prayers from the community.
“We ask that everyone join us in keeping Sgt. Gillispie’s family in their thoughts and prayers,” the department posted on Facebook. “Sgt. Gillispie served the Lima community with honor and distinction throughout his nearly 20-year career with the Lima Police Department.”
