Man leaves dog in hot car, ordered to court

Police in Dayton responded to a call that a small dog was left in a hot car on the 200 block of Liberty Road.

A neighbor called police July 25 when they noticed the dog was left alone in a gray Impala for a long period of time, according to the Dayton police report.

Police said Wayne Perkins, 65, left his dog unattended with the windows rolled up, the vehicle locked and turned off.

An animal care officer was called in to investigate. Police said Perkins returned to is car 26 minutes later from the time police were dispatched.

Perkins told the officers he left water in the car and was only gone for 15 minutes, according to the report.

This is not the first time Perkins has left a dog in a car.

Police warned him about leaving his dog in his car in July 2012, according to the report.

Perkins was issued a summons to appear in Dayton Municipal Court to answer to charges of animal cruelty and abandonment. He was also given a citation for not having a dog license.
