Mental health and crime: Mother shares son’s battle in getting treatment

With few public treatment options available in the Miami Valley for those living with a mental illness, some people’s attempts at self-medication are resulting in criminal charges.

That means more people with a mental illness in jail beds instead of treatment facilities.

News Center 7’s I-Team spoke to to Camela Staten about her son’s struggles with mental illness and how getting treatment is often an expensive and difficult process.

Starting shortly after his Dunbar High School graduation, his mental health battle has left a trail of mug shots two years later.
