One of his detectives called the phone number back and recorded the interaction.
The person who answers the phone admits “this is a scam” and a way to earn money, and says he does it because no one can catch him. The scammer then uses inappropriate language after learning the detective is recording to the call.
The sheriff says his office contacted the IRS. The IRS confirmed it will never ask for money over the phone, and will never call or email citizens without sending a letter in the mail first.
The sheriff says if you receive one of the scam calls, you should:
- Contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484 or www.tigta.com.
- Contact the Ohio Attorney General's Office at 1-800-282-0515 or www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov.
- File a report with the Federal Trade Commission at http://frccomplaintassistant.gov, please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
- Contact the Mercer County Sheriff's Office Detectives at 419-586-1450.
