Man in critical condition following shooting in Dayton

A man is in critical condition following a shooting at West Third Street and Melwood Avenue in Dayton.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was shot at least once, said a Dayton police Lt. Matt Beavers.

“They haven’t found out how many times he was hit, but there are Multiple shell casings on the ground,” he said.

Detectives are going door-to-door in the area to see if there were any witnesses or if any businesses had surveillance cameras that captured the incident.

Beavers said that it could take more time contacting businesses, as many have closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“As early as it was there’s not many businesses that are open right now,” he said.

Police have identified a suspicious vehicle in connection to the shooting, but are not releasing further details at this time.

“We’re in the beginning stages of this,” Beavers said. “The main concern now is to get him stable and get him treated.”

West Third Street was closed as police begin their investigation.

Officers were putting down markers and taping off the scene, according to a Dayton Daily News photographer at the scene.

Multiple shell casings were found at the scene.

The shooting was reported just before 7:30 a.m.
