Officers blocked off the area of Shedborne and Huffman avenues after getting a report that a man had a gun in the middle of the street around 11 p.m.
"He was very agitated," said Dayton police Sgt. Eric Sheldon, "suicidal, continuing to put the gun up to his head threatening suicide."
Sheldon said a member of the department's crisis prevention team tried to talk to the man, but the man continued to threaten to shoot himself. He was also asking for his brother.
"It was pretty clear he was going to commit suicide," Sheldon said.
Officers shot him with bean bags to force him to drop his gun and took him into custody.
Simpson was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.
Officers said the man was involved in a domestic violence situation earlier in the day, as well. His girlfriend and several children suffered minor injuries.
During the standoff, police told residents to stay away from their windows for their safety.
