Possible ‘skimmer’ found at Huber Heights Speedway

UPDATE @ 4:54 p.m.

It’s unclear whether a device found by a Speedway gas pump on Chambersburg Road is a “skimmer,” according to the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office.

Inspectors from the auditor’s office are checking gas pumps in Huber Heights after police were notified of the device found on the ground at Speedway, but also of security seals apparently tampered with at gas pumps at the Clark station.

Those pumps were inspected and found to be OK, according to the auditor’s office.

In a prepared statement, Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith said “a number of credit card skimmers” have been discovered in the past month and a half at gas stations across Southwest Ohio.

“It’s great that consumers are starting to be more alert and are reporting anything that seems suspicious,” Keith said in a prepared statement.

Police are investigating after a suspected skimming device was found at a Speedway gas station, in an apparent attempt to steal credit card information.

Huber Heights police said an officer was flagged down around 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the gas station, 6385 Chambersburg Road, after an electronic item was found at the base of pump No. 1.

The pump’s electronic access door was found unsecured on Friday and the pump was scheduled to be repaired by Speedway, police said.

Customers who used pump No. 1 at the gas station should only contact police if there is fraudulent activity on accounts. If so, alert the financial institution that issued the card and Huber Heights police.

Earlier this month, Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith said the threat for credit card skimmers is likely to worsen over the next couple years. Skimmers have been found in several counties already this year.
