Passerby finds woman dead of gunshot to head in Springfield

A woman was found dead with a gunshot wound to her head early Sunday, Springfield police reported.

A passerby found a woman laying on the sidewalk around 7:20 a.m. in the 1400 block of South Fountain Avenue. Originally, the 911 caller reported that the woman was injured, but then said she was not moving.

The woman was pronounced dead on the scene. Police on Sunday night were still not releasing further information, including her identity or whether there were any suspects.

Springfield police said the case is under investigation.
