A 19-year-old was arrested after deputies spotted a fire coming from the former Valerie Elementary School and between 10 and 15 people running as they approached.

Deputies were called around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday to the school at 4020 Bradwood Drive in Harrison Twp. on a report of people inside the vacant building, according to a release from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies searched the area for the people seen running away and one person was taken into custody.

Davion J. Henderson, 19, was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of arson and breaking and entering, jail records show.

The case remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and state and local fire investigators, the sheriff’s office said.

The former Valerie Elementary School has been closed since 2018 and was earmarked for demolition by the Dayton Public Schools board in June 2019.
