Teen, newborn inside apartments during Urbana drug raids

Police and parole officers raided three apartments Friday night in the same building in the 600 block of Hagenbuch Street as part of an ongoing drug investigation.

Two teams of Urbana police officers with search warrants conducted simultaneous raids of two apartments Adult Parole Authority officers from Champaign and Logan counties handled the occupant of the third apartment, according to a news release issued Saturday evening by Chief Matt D. Lingrell of the Urbana Police Division.

Police seized a large amount of packaged methamphetamine, prescription pills, marijuana, some unknown and suspected illegal drug substances, two bundles of cash and many items of drug paraphernalia, Lingrell said.

Two men were arrested and booked into the Tri-County Jail in Mechanicsburg.

Bubba Lee Hatfield, 33, is being held for the APA of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Correction.

James Andrew Johnson III, 38, is being held on suspicion of felony drug trafficking and drug possession charges.

During the raids a 13-year-old was inside one apartment, and Johnson’s newborn baby was inside his apartment, the chief said.

“I’m extremely proud of how well many of our newer officers helped us in carrying out these raids safely for everyone involved,” Lingrell said.
