A significant increase in criminal offenses last year in West Carrollton can be linked to a more fully staffed police department, officials said this week.

A sharp rise in adults charged with traffic offenses and a jump in the number charged in several criminal categories coincides with the department becoming fully staffed, Deputy Police Chief David Wessling said.

In 2015, the department was at its authorized strength of 23 after seeing staffing vacancies as high as 30 percent through much of this decade, Wessling said.

Last year, the recorded number of charges against adults totaled 3,338, a jump of nearly 35 percent compared to 2014 figures, records show. Those included a 38 percent jump in traffic citations in 2015 and a nearly 25 percent rise in criminal charges over data from two years ago.
