The Flyers advance to 14-1 on the season, matching their second best start since the 1955-56 season when they opened 20-1.
Dayton entered the game ranked top 10 in the nation in scoring defense, holding its opponents to just over 56 points per game. The strong defense continued tonight as the Flyers held the RedHawks, a team averging 68.9 points a game, to just 40 points, their lowest of the season.
The Flyers impressive defensive hold was made even more so by Marcus Johnson's defensive play against RedHawk forward Michael Bramos. Bramos entered the game averaging 19 points per game and had reached double-digits in each of his last six games, defending the top opposing scorers in each of those games.
However, UD's Marcus Johnson overwhelmed the match-up holding Bramos to just six points.
Julian Mavunga was the only Miami player to reach double-digits, at 12 points scored. The RedHawks out shot the Flyers 35 to 32 percent on the game, and were able to contain Dayton's usually strong bench, which shot just 2-of-20 from the field.
Scoring was at a premium in the first half, as both teams struggled to put points on the board. Marcus Johnson led all first half scorers with six in the opening frame.
Dayton and Miami changed leads six times and were tied five times in the low-scoring first half.
The teams entered the half tied at 17 points apiece. The 34 combined points tied for the second lowest in UD history. Fittingly, the lowest first half point total in program history came when these two teams met in 2001, when both mustered a combined 28 first half points.
The close play continued into the second half as neither team was able to hold the lead.
In the games final minutes, the Flyers were finally able to build and hold a lead. Closing out the game, Dayton outscored Miami 8-4, which ended up being the difference in the contest.
Dayton will take to the road and begin A-10 play against Massachusetts this Saturday in Springfield, Mass.
