Son accused in strangulation death of his mother makes initial court appearance

John T. Mukes stood mute and plead not guilty to charges stemming from the death of his mother during an arraignment hearing Tuesday morning.

UPDATE @ 3 p.m. (July 15):

John T. Mukes is behind bars after he was indicted Friday in the strangulation death of his mother in July 2016.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Mukes, who was booked into the Montgomery County Jail around 3:30 p.m. Friday. He is being held on suspicion of murder and felonious assault.

He is scheduled to appear Monday afternoon in court, according to online jail records.


A Dayton man has been indicted in the 2016 death of his mother.

John T. Mukes, 53, who is at large, is indicted for murder and felonious assault in connection to the July 2016 strangulation of 78-year-old Mary Hinesmon on Hoover Avenue.

The defendant had called 911 claiming his mother had been badly beaten and strangled. There was no sign of forced entry into the home, police said.

Forensic evidence linked the defendant to the killing, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

A warrant has been issued for Muke’s arrest.
