Dayton native wins Clark County Fair country music competition

Dayton-area native Alexis Gomez was named winner of the 32nd Annual Texaco Country Showdown local competition, a country music talent search and radio promotion was held at the 2013 Clark County Fair on Thursday evening.

This win marks completion of the first step in the national contest.

Gomez will advance to the Washington County Fair in Marietta on Sept. 2, to compete for $1,000 and the opportunity to perform at one of five regional competitions in the fall. Regional winners receive an all-expense paid trip to the national final to compete for the $100,000 grand prize and the national title.

Gomez grew up in the Dayton area and has been singing and playing music for as long as she can remember. Her father, brother and sister are all musicians. As she got older, she joined the family band.

She plays guitar and piano, and dabbles around with a few other instruments including banjo, bass and drums.

She’s won a number of local contests, where she’s been given the opportunity to showcase some of her original music.

“It’s all been so great, and I have such a blast performing live, but I love getting to play the songs that I write as much as anything!” Gomez said.

Now in its 32nd year, the Texaco Country Showdown finds the most promising country music talent in America, giving these performers a chance to launch a professional career. Nearly $200,000 in cash and prizes is awarded to the thousands of aspiring artists who compete each year.

Nationwide, two million fans will experience the Texaco Country Showdown via hundreds of live shows and nationally syndicated television and radio broadcasts.
