Dayton police: Man arrested after showing lighter that resembled gun

A 42-year-old man was arrested after police said he threatened employees of a business with what appeared to be a gun and was later discovered to be a lighter.

Police arrested Shaun Monte Coleman at Cato clothing on South Smithville Road on May 17 after employees said they thought they were being robbed with what they said was a “real gun,” according to Dayton police records.

Store workers said they called police after Coleman walked into the business and told employees “he has a surprise for us,” police records show. He later reached into a jacket pocket and “pulled out what….seemed was a small hand gun, when he pulled it out and pointed the gun at us,” according to the police report.

Meanwhile, police were called and then Coleman said he was holding a lighter, police records show.
