Dayton Prison To Change From Men To Women

The Dayton Correctional Institution and Montgomery Education and Pre-Release Center will be undergoing a major change this year, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.

The Dayton City Commission addressed the plan Wednesday morning that the men’s prison will switch to housing women only. The target date for the switch is by the end of the year, but it could happen before that, officials said.

The men will be moved to a facilities in Marion and Columbus.

Right now, there are more than 800 men housed in the facility. When the change is made, there will be as many as 1,400 women.

The plan calls for having two beds per cell instead of one, which will help reduce the cost per inmate, per day, commission was told.

Currently, this facility on Gettysburg Avenue is the highest cost per inmate in the state.

No additional staffing will be used, according to officials.
