Investigators said the fire started at or near a cooking appliance in the kitchen. One day later, loyal customers felt compelled to return and take a look at what was left.
Sherry Bayer said, "We were just heartbroken to see our spot. You can see through it."
Eating at the Der Dutchman was a family tradition.
"We would just sit there on this side to look at the river and watch the ducks while we ate," said Bayer.
Earl Isaacs, the Mayor of Waynesville, lives across the street from the restaurant and ate breakfast there everyday.
"It's a major draw for Waynesville. People from our community and different communities come here. When they leave, they shop in our shops. I think it's going to be very devastating for awhile," said Isaacs.
The 100 or so employees are also devastated. Company officials said they may try to keep some of them on the payroll by offering them temporary jobs at other Der Dutchman locations or having them help clean up from the fire.
Isaacs said, "Hopefully, they will rebuild. That's all I can hope for."
Company officials said they hope to have some answers about the future of the restaurant very soon.
Known for its size and good food, many receptions and other events were planned at the restaurant. For more information about the Der Dutchman, click here.
