DHL Express Moving To Northern Ky. Airport

DHL Express has decided to move its international air shipping hub for the U.S. to Cincinnati's main airport, which is in northern Kentucky.

The delivery company had already said it would be leaving Wilmington in southwest Ohio, eliminating about 8,000 jobs. But Friday's announcement about the 50-mile relocation to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport still came as a disappointment to workers.

Fifty-eight-year-old truck driver Mitchell Adams at Wilmington Air Park says his home is in Jeffersonville and he'd have to commute 70 miles each way to the northern Kentucky airport. Adams says that's not an option.

DHL used the Kentucky facility from 1983 to 2005 and said moving back will be cost-effective.

Rep. Mike Turner Reponse: Rep. Mike Turner issued the following statement Friday in response to DHL's decision to relocated their operations to northern Kentucky:

“I am disappointed in DHL’s decision to relocate their international business operations to Northern Kentucky. The community and local officials have worked diligently to make Clinton County an attractive place to do business.

“Instead of standing by their commitment, DHL executives have decided to walk away from the community and abandon an exceptional and dedicated workforce.

“The town of Wilmington came together to speak as one voice. Citizens have put up a good fight in an effort to keep DHL in Clinton County. I know the community is resilient and will recover. I will continue to work with residents and local officials for the future economic success of Wilmington.”

Gov. Strickland, Sen. Sherrod Brown and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher Response: Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, Lt. Governor Lee Fisher, Ohio Department of Development Interim Director Mark Barbash, Wilmington Mayor David Raizk, State Senator John Carey, and State Representative David Daniels released the following joint statement today on the decision of DHL Express to close their remaining operations at Wilmington and relocate to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in Kentucky.

“This is another unfortunate blow to the people of southwest Ohio. But we remain determined in our efforts to assist the hard-working employees, their families and the region through this difficult time. We are deeply disappointed by the announcement that DHL will be closing the remaining operations at Wilmington and relocating them to the DHL facility in Covington, Kentucky at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

“Since DHL’s initial announcement last year to leave, we have worked together – the State of Ohio, the City of Wilmington, elected officials and community leaders from the region – to diligently pursue a dialogue with DHL about mitigation assistance to offset the adverse impacts of the thousands of lost jobs. We will continue our steadfast pursuit of the possible donation of the Air Park to the community.”
