Education Expert to Visit Richmond Schools "Dropout Factory"

Richmond Community Schools are trying to keep students from dropping out of school after a recent study named the district a "dropout factory."

This week a researcher from Johns Hopkins University will visit the Wayne, County, Indiana school district. The university's Center for Social Organization of Schools identified Richmond high school as a "dropout factory" along with some 1,700-plus high schools.

Richmond High School's graduation rate in 2006 was only 54%, according to the Indiana Department of Education. Richmond Community Schools Superintendent Allen Bourff looks forward to this weeks visit. Bourff told the Palladium-Item newspaper, "Any time you can have a disinterested third party see objectively what's happening, I think there's always a benefit."

The Johns Hopkins University expert is expected to arrive at the school on Wednesday.
