Dayton Public Schools Start Aug. 17

Dayton Public Schools students get to enjoy a few extra days of summer vacation this year, returning to class on Aug. 17.

The later start date, which is one week later than last year, is part of the district’s return to a more traditional school calendar. In addition to the Aug. 17 start, two of three district intersessions – break periods for students and teachers held in October, December and March – have been shortened.

Despite the later start, DPS officials urge parents to make sure their children are registered and ready to return to class promptly on Aug. 17.

“It is critical that parents get their children registered in our Student Assignment Office immediately, so students are ready to come to school on the first day,” Superintendent Kurt Stanic said.

By registering early, parents avoid the long lines that occur before the start of a new school year. For more information, call the Student Assignment Office at 542-5555.

The 2009-2010 academic calendar is part of a two-year plan to phase in a more traditional school calendar that eliminates the two-week fall and spring breaks currently observed. Student attendance has not supported the district’s intersession programs, offered during the two-week breaks; the programs were intended for students who need additional help with core subjects or who may benefit from enrichment activities.

With the new calendar, DPS students will attend school Aug. 17, 2009, through June 2, 2010, with a one-week break in October and in March. A two-week winter break in December will be maintained.
