Fire Destroys Beavercreek Condo

People getting ready to go to sleep in one Beavercreek neighborhood had trouble shutting their eyes after loud booms rocked the street, sparking a fire.

The fire started ate Tuesday night in the Summit Ridge subdivision, near Interstate 675 and Shakertown Road.

Beavercreek Fire dispatchers were flooded with calls from residents. Dan Spencer said he heard, "A huge boom, a very, very loud noise." Spencer said his wife went to look outside and, "She opened the door and saw a fireball about twice as big as the condo go up, like something huge had exploded."

Beavercreek Battalion Fire Chief Kip Smith said, "When we arrived the garage was on fire, the flames were going through the roof of the garage and into the second floor."

Smith said they first checked to make sure the couple living in the burning condo were out. Once they discovered the man and woman were safe, they attacked the fire using ladder trucks to pour water down from above.

It took firefighters about 20 to 30 minutes to bring the flames under control. They said fire walls built into the three-unit condominium building helped keep the fire from spreading.

Investigators are focusing their attention on the garage. They said the flames seemed to center in and around an SUV parked in the garage. Firefighters said there were also a couple propane cylinders in that garage.

Firefighters do plan to return to the building and go through it again to check for clues. They did not let anyone stay in the building overnight, despite the fact that two of the units were not damaged.
