Former mayor, councilman recognized with humanitarian award

A former Middletown mayor and councilman has been recognized for his service to the city.

David Schiavone was presented with annual Robert “Sonny” Hill Humanitarian Award during the State of the City address Thursday.

Schiavone is the 12th recipient of the award that honors Hill, a former mayor, city commission chairman, city commission member and city council member. He was the first African-American mayor of Middletown.

“It means a lot to me and means a lot to my family. It’s a great honor,” Schiavone said.

Schiavone served on council for 16 years, including five years as mayor. He also served on various city boards and commissions for a number of years.

“David Schiavone is being honored and recognized for his hard work, tenacity, and vision which has contributed to the progress of our community,” said Mayor Larry Mulligan. “David Schiavone’s legacy of service will stand as a hallmark for others to emulate. The city of Middletown is a better place for his service.”

Schiavone praised the mayor and city council for their work in keeping the momentum going that has continued over the years in making the city better. He also praised the Middletown school board and administration for their work and called the new renovations of the high school “magnificent.”
