The judge said Taylor and three others broke into Brown's home on the grounds of Brown and Sons Nursery and Garden Center in 2003. He said they beat and shot Brown while trying to learn the combination to his safe.
Brown's brother, John Brown, spoke in court and said Vernon was a vibrant, hard working family man who had big plans for his future. He said Vernon had retirement plans where he wanted to relax and enjoy himself after spending so many years building up his beloved nursery.
One of the other men who were charged in Brown's murder has pleaded guilty. The other two are awaiting trial.
