A simulated hazardous material incident took place this morning at Sugar Creek Packing.

The exercise included personnel from Dayton Hazmat, Montgomery County Emergency Management and Greene County Emergency Management.

Denny Bristow, Dayton Regional Hazmat Team Coordinator, said the team is graded by the state on its “capabilities on handling a hazardous materials release.” Funds from Homeland Security are tied to the results, he said.

“It went real well,” Bristow said. “We probably carry over a $1 million worth of equipment, probably half of that purchased with Homeland Security funds. Homeland Security funds have upgraded our equipment.”

The Red Cross opened a shelter for exercise evacuees, some streets were blocked, and many firetrucks and ambulances were in the area of Sugar Creek Packing.

Also participating in the exercise were Dayton Fire Department and Dayton Police Department, as well as fire departments from Sugarcreek Twp., Washington Twp., Moraine, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Miami Twp. (Greene County).

Simulated victims were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital.
