IUE Union Prepares Food Pantry For Idle Workers

Officials with IUE 798 said they are expected to open a food pantry later this week to help General Motors workers who have been out of work because of a parts shortage.

The food pantry was opened at 313 S. Jefferson Street and is expected to help those families who have been affected by the strike.

The GM Plant in Moraine went idle about a month ago when American Axle workers went on strike in Detroit, causing 29 GM factories to be shut down, including ones in Ohio.

Officials with the union said they are now in the process of stocking shelves and getting the food pantry ready for GM workers.

In regards to the strike with American Axle, a top labor official and the top executive of the Michigan-based company are planning to meet to end a nearly six-week strike at the auto parts maker.

American Axle spokeswoman Renee Rogers said the meeting between United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger and American Axle CEO Richard Dauch is scheduled for Monday, but she did not know when or where.
