In addition, the bakery also will have a “round-up” program in which customers can donate the change from their order to a non-profit organization that will rotate monthly, Smith said. And she will have a pay-it-forward wall of sorts in which customers can pre-pay for an item off the menu or otherwise donate for a subsequent customer’s benefit.

The bakery will also bake birthday cakes to give to children in need, the bakery founder said, and a community herb garden will be planted alongside the bakery for neighborhood residents to utilize.
St. Anne the Tart will open at 7 a.m. March 1 at 1500 E. Fifth St., Smith announced yesterday, Feb. 20.

The new bakery will serve a variety of baked goods from sweet pastries to lunch-worthy savory tarts, and will offer an array of coffee beverages, tea, granola and yogurt. The new bakery’s hours will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The bakery employs three full-time and one part-time bakers.
The bakery’s building dates to 1878 and once housed the Stockert Saloon, among other businesses. More recently, it housed a violin shop.
A native of Columbus, Smith operated a bakery in Lexington, Ky. prior to moving to Dayton four years ago. She said she chose the St. Anne’s Hill historic neighborhood as a location for her coffee shop based on how vibrant the neighborhood has become.

Smith had originally planned to open a bakery across the street at 1509 E. Fifth St., but switched gears last year when the building at 1500 E. Fifth became available.
The building has a second floor that will serve as community and meeting space as well as a more quiet seating area.
