5 Killed In 24 Hours On Mercer Co. Road

Three individuals from the same family were killed in a car-semi crash in Tuesday morning in Mercer County north of Celina, while 16 1/2 hours earlier a mother and her unborn child died in a another crash south of Celina. Both crashes were on U.S Route 127.

The Mercer County 911 center was flooded with calls, some callers in tears and others frantically reporting the crash, at U.S Routes 127 and 33, about six miles north of Celina.

Mercer County deputies said a 2000 Ford Focus entered the intersection while eastbound and was struck by the semi. Killed in that crash was the driver of the car, Regina D. Spradlin, 50, of Rockford. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, Bethany R. Spradlin, 25, of St. Marys, as well as Jordan J. Spradlin, 3, were pronounced dead at local hospitals in Lima and VanWert.

Gabrial Spradlin, 4, also of St. Marys, was taken to Van Wert Hospital and later transferred to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Ind., where she is in critical condition.

The driver of an empty, flatbed, semi was identified as Troy A. Brown, 34, of Lone Rock, Wisconsin. He was treated at Mercy Health Hospital in Coldwater for a back injury.

On Monday night at 6:23 p.m. south of Celina, a crash on U.S. 127 at Coldwater Creek Road claimed the life of a Montezuma woman and her unborn child. She is identified as Ashley M. Curry, 20. Her daughter, Ava, 19 months, is under treatment at Children's Medical Center in Dayton. They were passengers in a car operated by Brandon Bradley, 22, of Montezuma.

His vehicle went out of control on the slick pavement and into the path of another car. That vehicle was driven by Ronald J. Lange, 46, of Osgood. The passenger in his vehicle was his wife, Wanda Lange, 50.

Bradley and the Lange's were transferred to Mercy Health in Coldwater.

Both crashes on Route 127 remain under investigation by the Mercer County Sheriff's Department. A Mercer County Sheriff's Department employee described the past 24 hours as "awful."
