Kmart Keeps Layaway Program During Tough Times

Tough economic times are bringing back an old shopping concept that a lot of stores did away with years ago.

Kmart has been offering layaway service to shoppers for years, and this year they are making a profit on it.

The layaway at the Kmart store in Xenia is packed with Christmas gifts.

Store manager Danny Young said, “With the economy the way it is, put stuff in layaway and take the time to pay on it, so you don’t have to dish it out at once.”

Kmart is one of the few stores in the area that has held on to the program.

Emma Lindsey used it when she had small children. She said, “I think it’s great for all the mothers who need to get all that stuff together.”

Paying for your purchase is easy. You only have to put 10 percent down, plus $5 for the Kmart fee, and then you have eight weeks to get out your purchase.
