Kwik Kuts owner happy with decision

Early in her life, Sherry Breece had visions of being a professional golfer.

Now instead of cutting strokes off her score, she is cutting people’s hair as owner of Kwik Kuts hair salon at 4744 Roosevelt Blvd. in Middletown.

“Golf just didn’t work out,” Breece said, adding that after putting so much time into it, she got burned out. “That’s when I met (my husband) Carl and decided I wanted to go back to school.”

Breece had cut hair for her family members since she was age 13, she said, so she made the decision to go to beauty school in 2004. After graduating from Carousel Beauty College, she worked at a several places over the course of three years while all along thinking about owning her own salon some day.

“We talked about it for a while,” Breece said. “One day Carl asked if I was ready to go on my own and I was.”

The search began for the right location, Breece said. When she finally found that place, Breece knew from the minute she first stepped into the building how she wanted it to look.

“I saw a vision immediately of how I wanted to set it up,” Breece said. “I got all the measurements and started drawing pictures of where I wanted everything to be and it is exactly the way I wanted it.”

It took about two months of working from “daylight to dusk” to get the building ready, she said, but Breece was open for business in December 2008.

“The economy was kind of bad then and a lot of people thought it wouldn’t go,” Breece said. “It was pretty shaky the first six months, but for some reason it just took off in about the seventh or eighth month and we’ve been doing great ever since.

“We could have easily said we were not going to do it and I would have kept working somewhere else,” she continued. “It was a gamble. It was exciting and scary at the same time, but I’m glad we did it. I love what I do and I’m glad it worked out the way it did.”

Breece also has a new outlook on golf. The winner of 10 Middletown Women’s City golf championships doesn’t put as much pressure on herself now and she finds a way to play a couple times a week.

“I enjoy it more now,” Breece said.
