“Mid-life or older adults, or caretakers will probably find the session helpful,” said Julie Buchanan, older adult specialist librarian. “This will be an overview of scams that target older adults and also talk about identity theft.”
The Belmont branch, 1041 Watervliet Ave., will hold a session at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 focusing on consumer laws. This class will last one hour and also be led by James.
The focus will be the top 10 complaint categories the Ohio Attorney General’s office receives.
“This focuses more on shop smart and consumer rights,” Buchanan said. “Particularly how to protect yourself from consumer fraud. Everyone is affected by consumer rights.”
Future classes include programs from the Alzheimer’s Association, elder law and estate planning classes and a November four-part series about Medicare, which includes advice from a financial planner.
“It’s always been the library’s mission to bring information to the community. Older adults are proportionally more likely to be targeted by fraud,” Buchanan said. “Even savvy consumers can be affected by fraud. These sessions will be a good place to get information from a reputable source.”
