Members of Arnold's family cried out as Judge Wiseman sentenced Arnold to life in prison without parole. Wiseman said, "No adjectives exist to adequately describe this heinous atrocity. This act is shocking and utterly abhorrent to our civilized society. How anyone, especially the baby's mother could perform this act is beyond all human, moral comprehension."
Earlier, a jury had found Arnold guilty of aggravated murder in the death of her infant baby, Paris Talley. However, they spared her from the death penalty.
Prosecutors wanted no parole because they said Arnold has shown no remorse.
Defense attorneys were hoping for a 25-year to life sentence. They have filed a motion for another trial because they say new witnesses have come forward. They also allege prosecutorial and police misconduct.
"The jury has not heard the truth, and the truth has not com out completely," said Defense Attorney Jon Paul Rion. "When (the truth comes out) there is no jury in the land that could convict China Arnold."
Defense attorneys filed a memorandum in support of a new trial Monday. According to the documents, a new witness came forward after Arnold was found guilty, and a witness who testified that Arnold confessed has now recounted her testimony.
The defense also claims that prosecution and law enforcement officials threatened and assaulted that witness, forcing her to testify.
"We deal with facts and there would be no reason to do what they are suggesting in their motion," said Assistant Prosecutor David Franceschelli. "It just doesn't make any sense to do that."
Outside the courthouse, family members chanted "China is innocent!" and said that they will continue to fight for her freedom.
"China is a very caring mother," said Gloria Scott, Arnold's mother. "She's giving and she wanted her baby girl more than anything in the entire world."
Members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference say they also believe China Arnold is innocent.
Local SCLC leaders said they're getting national assistance in their quest to free her.
