Free tuition offer draws thousands to Antioch

In the process of rebuilding after a three-year shutdown, Antioch College's offer of free tuition for next year's class of 75 students has drawn thousands of applicants.

Antioch closed in 2008 amid financial problems and reopened last year as an independent school with about 35 students.

Our partners at the Dayton Daily News report Antioch's students are not eligible for federal financial aid because it is not accredited. But a fellowship program covers the total of more than $100,000 in tuition over four years for students who are granted admission.

The application deadline is Wednesday, and the school expects about 2,500 applications for the 75 spots.

President Mark Roosevelt emphasizes that recipients of the fellowship money are expected to commit to help shape the future of the college.
