Honor Flight wants you to greet veterans

Honor Flight Dayton needs you to greet veterans Saturday night, organizers say.

More than 100 veterans will fly from Dayton to tour Washington, D.C., monuments April 14 and then return to Dayton International Airport.

The roll call includes six World War II, 18 Korean War, and 93 Vietnam War veterans, according to Glenn B. Greet, an Honor Flight board member.

“That welcome home is icing on the cake for veterans who hopefully who have been treated like kings and queens all day,” he said in an interview. “When we get thanks from the veterans for taking them on this trip, they all without fail emphasize how great it was to be welcomed home by so many people.”

Past arrivals have brought 500 to 1,500 people to welcome home veterans, he said.

“We’re never sure exactly (how many people will show up) because people from throughout the community and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base just spread the word and come out,” he said.

Greeters should arrive between 9:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. for the flight’s scheduled 10:30 p.m. arrival, Honor Flight said

Attendees should proceed to the Transportation Safety Administration-controlled area in front of the downstairs ticket counters at the airport to greet veterans, Honor Flight said.

For active-duty service members or others associated with the military who want to greet veterans as they de-plane at the gate, Honor Flight says they should arrive from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and ask for a gate pass at the American Airlines ticket counter to walk through the TSA checkpoint.

Honor Flight Dayton has three more flights scheduled this year: May 19, Sept. 8 and Oct. 27.
