The two leaders will be in charge of a $5 billion science and technology development program, both government and customer-funded research, and a workforce of about 10,100 employees, according to the base spokesman Daryl Mayer.
Peters succeeded Joseph Sciabica, who in October became director of the Air Force Civil Engineer Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.
Masiello will take over from Maj. Gen. William N. McCasland, who is expected to end a two-year assignment as leader of AFRL.
AFRL has four directorates based at Wright-Patterson: aerospace systems, materials and manufacturing, sensors and the 711th Human Performance Wing, which includes the Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. AFRL has nine directorates across the nation.
Most recently, Peters was director of test and evaluation at Air Force headquarters in Washington. In 1980, Peters started his career at Wright-Patterson as an aircraft survivability engineer. He has educational degrees from Sinclair Community College, Wright State University and the University of Dayton.
Masiello will leave his assignment as director of special programs in the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics at the Pentagon. In 1981, the Air Force Academy graduate started his career as a pilot.
