Vietnam War hero to speak at film series

A Medal of Honor recipient who piloted helicopter aeromedical evacuations in Vietnam will headline a Reel Stuff Salute to Heroes film festival Saturday at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

Retired Maj. Gen. Patrick H. Brady, selected for the Army’s Medal of Honor, will speak at the event inside the Air Force Museum Theater, organizers say. The festival will highlight Vietnam veterans’ wartime service, organizers said.

The retired Army aviator was credited with rescuing more than 5,000 wounded on 2,500 combat missions in two tours of duty in Vietnam.

Over the years, the film festival has brought in filmmakers and veterans across the country to talk to audiences.

“It helps us to bring our mission alive here,” said Mary Bruggeman, museum chief of attractions operations.

Festival films will include:

At 11 a.m., Sleeping Dog Productions filmmakers Jon Tennyson and Scott Guyette will show “In Their Own Words,” a film with interviews of World War II pilots.

Tickets for the segment also include the movie “Warbirds In Review,” the first time the saga of warbirds flying to the AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, Wis., will be shown on a big screen, organizers said.

At 1:30 p.m., the film “Voices of Valor” will feature World War II Doolittle Raiders pilot Richard E. Cole, a Dayton native, and Bob Hoover, a former test pilot and legendary air show performer. The segment will roll out the documentary “Welcome Home,” about veterans who served in Vietnam. Charles Finch, a retired Army colonel who was a forward air controller in Vietnam, is scheduled to speak to the audience.

At 3 p.m., the documentary “When I Have Your Wounded,” will detail helicopter aeromedical evacuations in combat in Vietnam. Brady will speak during the segment, said festival organizer Ron Kaplan.

Tickets cost between $10 to $16 per film showing. A full-day pass for all five films costs $30. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Air Force Museum Foundation.
