Abbott, county agree on waste disposal plan

Miami County has agreed to allow the new Abbott Nutrition plant in Tipp City take non-recyclable materials to a waste-to-energy facility in Indiana versus the county Transfer Station north of Troy.

An agreement between the new business and the county contains a waiver of the requirement that waste generated in the county must be taken to the county solid waste facility at the Transfer Station for handling and disposal. Paul Huelskamp said the waiver, approved last week, is a first for the county.

The materials being taken to the waste-to-energy facility otherwise would have been headed to a landfill or incinerator. Under the agreement, Abbott will pay the county $28.25 per ton for each ton sent to an alternative facility. The per ton fee is 80 percent of what otherwise would be paid to dispose of the materials through the Transfer Station. Abbott did not respond to an inquiry regarding the Miami County waste waiver.
