Analysts look to Kroger earnings for clues

CINCINNATI, Ohio --(AP) -- When Kroger reports its first-quarter results on Thursday analysts will be looking for clues on how consumers are holding up.

The Cincinnati-based chain is the nation's largest traditional-format grocery store operator. It has said it's been passing along some higher costs to shoppers while increasing fuel rewards for regular shoppers.

The chain and its wide range of competitors are facing rising prices for meat, dairy, coffee and other grocery products from suppliers who have higher commodity and energy costs. Meanwhile, many U.S. households are still feeling pinched by the economy and higher gas prices.

Kroger pricing and strategies help set industry trends in a field that includes dollar stores, warehouse clubs, and giant retailers led by Wal-Mart Stores.
