Executives chose a location a quarter mile off the Interstate 75 and Ohio 122 interchange, said Carol Turner, who is slated to be the hospital’s next president and chief executive officer after Jan. 1, following the retirement announcement Monday of longtime top executive Doug McNeill.
With the move, the hospital went from 28 acres in a residential area to a 190-acre campus, $195 million hospital.
Martin Russell, director of Warren County’s Office of Economic Development, said the facility is a significant anchor near the interchange. It’s Warren County’s first full-service hospital.
“I think from Warren County’s perspective, the new Atrium Medical Center is one of the first sort of catalysts in developing further that 122, exit 32 interchange,” Russell said.
In the past three years, Atrium’s revenue has grown from $184 million to $230 million, the work force added 200 jobs to total 1,800 employees, and patient discharges has increased from 11,300 to 13,200 last year, Turner said.
The old emergency room on McKnight Drive was above capacity with 58,000 visits a year. Last year, Atrium’s emergency room had 63,000 visits, said Turner.
Also with the space, Atrium has expanded programs to launch interventional cardiology and perform the first open heart surgery in 2008, and provide devices to area emergency medical technicians to transmit heart monitor readings from the scene, for example, according to Atrium. The fact emergency personnel can transmit heart monitor readings before patients reach the hospital was one of the keys to Atrium’s most recent accreditation as a Chest Pain Center in October, according to Atrium.
In addition, the da Vinci Surgical System was unveiled this year.
The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton is among partners to locate on the campus. Next on tap is the $7.5 million Greentree Health Science Academy, a public and private collaboration slated to open fall 2011.
The hospital first opened as Middletown Hospital in 1917. It joined the Premier Health Partners system in 2005.
