FAIRFIELD — AurGroup Financial employees are descending on Butler County in blue company T-shirts to volunteer at community service events and projects.
The Fairfield-based credit union implemented a program in March, Year of Service, to ask employees to volunteer a total eight hours. If all 65 employees put in eight hours, and some of them have already passed that, it would be a total 520 hours spent hands-on in the communities where it operates — Fairfield, Hamilton, Fairfield Twp., West Chester Twp. and Cincinnati.
Since March, employees already have logged 300 hours, said Eileen Meeker, AurGroup’s vice president of business development who started the program.
“The community needs the help, the organizations need the help,” she said.
Employees are not required to do community service, but they’re given work time to make it happen, she said. As a result it’s a business undertaking that requires shuffling of schedules and workers between locations to still service customers. The goal is 100 percent participation, she said.
On May 14, a team participated in Relay for Life at Hamilton High School, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Melissa Brenner, AurGroup vice president of finance, said Relay for Life was personal because of a coworker who had Lymphoma.
Brenner said Year of Service has been an opportunity to give back to the community and work with coworkers who they don’t work with on a daily basis.
“What we’ve given and what we’ve gotten out of it is priceless,” Brenner said.
