An Austin Landing financial firm wants to construct a 90-square foot sign on a building it occupies about one-third of near the center of the 70-acre development.

Baird Private Wealth Management seeks a major change to its plan in order to put a “illuminated blade sign” on the southwest corner of the Endeavour building on Penny Lane overlooking the park near Cinepolis, records show.

The sign would be 14 feet “from the bottom of the sign to grade” for the first-floor business. Baird occupies 11,499 square feet of the 34,470 square foot building, but development standards do not permit the type of sign the company wants in that location, according to the township.

Other businesses in that building and the connecting one – the five-story Progress Park Tower – have signs near the top floor that are visible from Austin Boulevard.

“Baird cannot place an identification sign at the top of the elevation of the building as Marxent has, and this would leave Baird without proper identification in this large complex,” the application states.

“This type and placement of sign would provide adequate identification and advertisement for Baird in this large complex of mixed use facilities,” documents show. “The proposed sign would not look garish or out of place and would be in scale with the building and other existing signs.”

Because of its location, current guidelines permit only wall signage near the bottom of the building, said Kyle Hinkelman, township deputy director of community development.

The development standards for that building were designed to allow individual retail tenants on the first floor of that building with office tenants on the second and third floors,” according to Hinkelman.

“When Baird took the first floor for office use, they still had to meet the general standards put in place on the building, which does not permit signage above the first floor for their space,” he added. “Since they have access to their office from both sides of the building, they are requesting to have additional signage to make it clear where they are located and how they are to be accessed.”

Baird is seeking a major modification to its final development plan. The issue is scheduled to be addressed by the township’s zoning commission April 21.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting will be taking place via Zoom teleconference, according to the township.
