Richard Cordray, Ohio attorney general, announced the initiative Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the annual conference of the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations.
Privately owned companies can still set their own prices for the service, but Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and FBI agencies offer the service for set costs.
The Web check at Ohio BMV deputy registrar sites will be $32 for a state level or BCI background check; $34 for a federal level or FBI check, $61 for a check against state and federal fingerprint databases.
For a complete list of every location offering WebCheck, go to ohioattorneygeneral.gov/Webchecks.aspx on the Web.
Electronic fingerprinting and demographic information will be captured at the deputy registrar location, encrypted and compared to the fingerprint database at the BCI.
A similar comparison will be made if an additional FBI check is needed, and results will be mailed to the recipient address supplied by the individual while at the registrar’s office.
WebCheck is a partnership of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and Ohio’s BCI.
About $300,000 in grants will be used for training and equipment. More than 100 deputy registrar’s offices will be offering the service sometime during the month of October.
