Bayless ready to ‘pass the torch’ as Xenia’s mayor

Xenia Mayor Marsha Bayless is not running for re-election after serving two four-year terms, and one council member has filed petitions to run for the office in November.

Bayless said she's ready to do what she planned to do after retiring as the principal at McKinley Elementary.

"This is a good time for me to pass the torch," Bayless said. "I feel our city is making great strides in moving us forward as a community. Businesses are coming, there is new construction -- And that means growth."

Council member Sarah Mays has filed petitions to get her name on the Nov. 7 ballot as a candidate for the office of mayor. Mays said friends helped her to collect 167 signatures from Xenia residents.

Those signatures and all other candidates' petitions for the November ballot must be certified by the Greene County Board of Elections. Candidates will be certified by Aug. 22.
