Bellbrook High School makes Newsweek’s Best High Schools list

SUGARCREEK TWP., Greene County — Bellbrook High School has been ranked among America’s best high schools in Newsweek magazine’s annual list of best public high schools, school officials learned this week.

The list is based on “how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests,” according to the magazine’s Web site, www.newsweek.com.

Only six percent of all public schools in the U.S. made the list, and only 36 Ohio schools are on it.

Bellbrook is the only high school from the Dayton area on the list, with the closest other school William Mason High School in Warren County.

Bellbrook High School Principal Chris Baker called the listing “another great recognition of the hard work and partnership of the kids, faculty, administration, parents, and board of education.”

The magazine lists 1,623 schools. Bellbrook High School is ranked 1,495; William Mason High School, 1,427. Of the top 10 Ohio high schools, two ranked in the top 100: Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, ranked 65; and Wyoming High School in Hamilton County, ranked 77.

The list was made by looking at the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge (AICE) tests given at a school each year. That number was divided by the number of seniors graduating in May or June, according to the magazine’s Web site.

The researchers looked at all public high schools they could find that achieved a ratio of at least 1, meaning the school had as many tests in 2009 as it had graduates.

The magazine’s Web site allows one to look up profiles of each school and make comments.

Bellbrook’s profile reads:

“Bellbrook High School is a public high school in the Sugarcreek Twp. area. It is part of the excellent-rated Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Local School District. The school serves grades 9 to 12. Their mascot is the Golden Eagle and their colors are purple and gold. Bellbrook has won every Southwestern Buckeye League ‘All Sports’ title since 1995. The music program is excellent with the Marching Eagles capturing several BOA national championships. Bellbrook High School offers 15 AP courses, dual enrollment courses including mandarin Chinese. Bellbrook also had a full complement of STEM courses and has been nationally certified by the Project Lead the Way engineering initiative. We will add biomedical studies in 2010-11. Students are very involved, with approximately two-thirds of the students involved in co- and extra-curricular activities.”

The profile lists a school population of 945 students, with 62 faculty members.
