A Butler County business celebrating its 40th anniversary credits customer service, consistency and honesty as the secrets to its longevity.
Started in May 1972, Pro Care Carpet Cleaning changed hands several times until Wendy Kissel started running the company in 1991 and immediately spurred a 33 percent growth in revenue.
“We prided ourselves on customer service as far as treating people like you want to be treated,” she said.
That includes sending certified, experienced and punctual technicians who are knowledgeable, courteous and professional in all their residential and commercial cleaning.
The company’s main services include carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, water extraction and emergency water damage restoration
It also performs rug cleaning and auto cleaning, both on site and at its facilities at 2237 Highland Street in Middletown.
Pro Care, which Kissel became full owner of in 2010, has lasted four decades and weathered several economic downturns because it has stayed consistent, providing excellent service each time, following up to ensure a customer is satisfied and sending reminder and thank you cards.
“How many businesses say ‘thank you’ when they are hired for a service?” Kissel said.
The majority of customers come from referrals after establishing personal relationships that let customers know the company truly cares about them, she said.
“They’re not just numbers to us. They’re actual people,” Kissel said.
The Pro Care system cleans a carpet thoroughly with a state-of-the-art rotary cleaning system that removes all the spills and chemical residue from a carpet and leaves it drier than traditional steam cleaning.
“With other systems, if you’re extracting chemical and don’t get it all out, you’re attracting soil,” she said. “It’s going to stick to the carpet so when you vacuum it, it’s not going to come out and you’re going to get carpet that soils fast.”
That soil acts as an abrasive, which breaks down fibers and wears out a carpet faster.
The business has conquered a slew of large-scale cleanup projects, including a church that flooded after a roof collapsed.
“We’ve been in some really interesting situations through the years,” she said. “In this business, you’re likely to run into anything.”
But all the experience in the world wouldn’t mean anything without Pro Care’s reputation for honesty, she said.
“We tell people what they need to hear,” she said. “If we can’t get something out, we tell them and try to do them right. I know that’s the secret why we’re still in business.”
Keeping things professional means ensuring every employee is certified, wears photo identification badges and uniforms and follows a rigid appearance code.
“I’m real strict about who I would let go in somebody’s home,” she said. “I have to have people who are going to treat our customers right.”
In the last six months, Pro Care started heavily marketing some of its new services, such as tile and grout cleaning. It also hired a salesman to handle commercial sales, boosting staffing levels to take care of the company’s more than 5,000 customers in Butler, Warren and Montgomery counties.
One of those customers, Ron Spaulding of Wilson Schramm Spaulding Funeral Home, said Pro Care has been cleaning carpets in his home and business for more than a decade.
“When you schedule an appointment, they’re always on time,” Spaulding said. “They’re very polite, and they do an excellent job on their rotary steam cleaning process. The carpets always look great when they’re done.
“They’re just plain nice people.”
