Centervillie Optimists celebrate 5 years of flag waving

CENTERVILLE — The Noon Optimist Club of Centerville recently celebrated their fifth year with the Avenue of Flags community project.

This community project and fund-raiser is a patriotic activity which promotes neighborhood identity and pride.

On five flag holidays (Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Veterans Day) club volunteers place 3-foot-by-5-foot American flags on a 10-foot pole in the front yard of more than 350 homeowners in Centerville and Washington Twp.communities who subscribe to the program.

Many homeowners have joined together to create that special “Avenue of Flags” in their neighborhood on those flag days.

“Our club has seen this program grow to almost 400 flags for the upcoming Labor Day holiday,” said Tom Novak, Avenue of Flags committee chairman and past president. “The positive comments for our subscribers have been absolutely overwhelming and heart warming. “
