2 charged after gun, knife used during child visitation argument

A dispute over child visitation involving an ex-father-in-law and ex-son-in-law ended with them pulling a gun and knife on each other.

The pair appeared Monday morning via video in Miami County Municipal Court.

The son-in-law, Randy Hawkins, 49, of Piqua, was charged with felonious assault and improper handling of a firearm.

The father-in-law, Doug Clegg, 49, of West Milton, was charged with felonious assault.

During a court-ordered visitation, Hawkins was returning one of his sons to his ex-wife in the 2500 block of state Route 718.

Deputies said Gregg was armed with the knife and Hawkins was reportedly armed with a gun.

One shot was fired, but no one was struck.

Hawkins was treated at Upper Valley Medical Center for a stab wound to a hand.

He was arrested by deputies at the hospital.

Clegg was released from jail on his own recognizance by the judge.

A cash bond set at $3,500 for Hawkins.
