Co-founders Jason Johnston and Jason Barton felt a need to help hurting families in the south Montgomery County area, and began by delivering meals to four families three years ago.
Last year, they fed nearly 9,000 people, and through the organization’s mobile meals, they served as many as 123 families in one day this summer. With this event, the nonprofit charity is about to break that record. Johnston indicated that they will have enough bagged food for 1 to 2 weeks of meals for 300 families. They are partnering with a local Ohio Military Reserve unit for this outreach program.
“The idea was presented to us by Dick Wilson, safety services director at SouthBrook,” said Johnston. “The military reserves need to train for disaster relief, and we’re just trying to get food out to people, so he thought we could accomplish both goals together.”
Bogg sent out fliers through the local school system about the community service project. The unit will set up a point of distribution in SouthBrook’s parking lot, 9095 Washington Church Road in Miami Twp. The unit assisting will be Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Civil Support and Sustainment Brigade.
“In our position, we see a lot of the working poor. Mom or dad has lost their job, and meals are being skipped,” said Johnston. “Our numbers have really been up in June, July, and August because kids are out of school and miss that school meal.”
Bogg provided for 700 families last month alone, and have donated 60,000 meals so far in 2012. This Sunday, soldiers in uniform will distribute about 3,000 pounds of food to underserved people in the Miamisburg area.
