Clayton City Council to vote tonight to add police officer position

Clayton City Council will vote on adding a full-time position to the Police Department.

Clayton City Council will vote on adding a full-time position to the Police Department.

The city of Clayton is expected to vote to add a full-time patrol officer position to the police department at the council meeting tonight.

If council approves the position, it is hoped that it will be filled by July 1.

If there is an approval, the new position will increase the Police Department’s projected 2019 budget by approximately $38,000, due to wage increase and fringe benefits, according to Director of Development Jack Kuntz.

With a new hire, the department will have 14 full-time officers and four part-time officers, according to Director of Development Jack Kuntz.

The department is planning to hire a new part-time officer in 2019. .

Clayton Police Department continues to commit to two school resource officers at Northmont City Schools, and with the increase of calls by nine percent across the city in the past three years, the department has a need to add the full-time position, officials said.

The increase in staffing will enable the city to continue to have a stable number of officers on every shift, coping with unexpected injuries, sicknesses and approved leave, according to Kuntz.

Clayton was recently named one of the safest cities in Ohio, according to the National Council for Home Safety and Security, and a best city to raise a family in Montgomery County.

The department participates in many activities, not just patrolling the streets. The activities include Coffee with a Cop, Bicycle Helmet/Ice Cream Cone Program, Police and Fire Open House and Shop with a Cop at Christmas.
