Cloudy with a Chance of Podcast: Hurricane Florence

Hurricane Florence was the first major hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The storm is responsible for more than 30 deaths and billions of dollars in damage to the coast and inland areas of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Devastating storm surge, damaging inland flooding and dangerous winds moved on shore as the storm weakened Category 1 hurricane on Friday, Sept. 14. Despite the winds not being "as strong,” the life-threatening storm surge and flood threat never changed.

Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini and McCall Vrydaghs talked with several colleagues from sister stations along the East Coast and even a storm damage analyst about what it was like to cover the powerful and deadly hurricane.

Meteorologist Brian Monahan from WSB in Atlanta was right there when Florence made landfall, experiencing the strongest winds of the eyewall. He says the sights, sounds and smells of this powerful storm is something he will never forget.

Meteorologist Garrett Bedenbaugh from WJAX in Jacksonville, Florida was also sent to cover the storm. He is from South Carolina and said watching the forced evacuations of some of the beloved beaches he grew up visiting left a lasting impression.

News anchor and reporter formerly from WHIO, John Paul, now at WSOC in Charlotte, was in the studio doing extended coverage while worrying about his family at home dealing with freshwater flooding. He shares his experience.

Finally, as families still deal with some cresting rivers and begin pick up the pieces, Kirstie & McCall brought back meteorologist and storm damage analyst for Assurant, Bryan Wood, to talk about how they will handle insurance claims as a company and shares advice for all homeowners.
